When is a micro market the right choice?
Micro Markets are becoming ever more popular in employee break rooms, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the right fit for everyone.
Things that need to be considered:
Micro Markets work best in a closed environment. If a company has outside contractors, delivery people, truckers that have access to the market, they may not understand how the micro market concept works. We have experienced this where these outsiders think that it is a company benefit provided free of charge and it’s free for the taking. If a client is presented with a thumb drive addressing shortages and the offenders can’t be identified, the micro market may not last long. This same problem presents itself at companies that have high turnover or have a large temporary work force. This is also the reason why you will not see a micro market in airports or other transient areas.
Initially, shortages may occur. Sometimes shortages occur because of honest user error. This simply requires training and good instructional materials. Other shortages occur because of intentional theft. When there is theft, an operator may present the client with information that will require some sort of action. Most companies welcome this information with the understanding that if an employee is going to take something from the micro market, what’s to say that they’re not doing the same at the company itself. Other companies do not want to address theft issues because they may be having a difficult time finding or retaining help.
Will you be able to provide an internet connection? Micro markets work through the internet, and a hard-line connection is best. Will there be firewalls? If a hard connection isn’t available, would a wireless solution work?
The prices for a micro market item tend to be higher. Operators need to charge higher prices as there are additional fees and overhead costs associated with micro markets.
Check to see if there are any local health department requirements. In one county where we operate, hand sinks are required in the break room. The reason being is that a food item, i.e. apple may need to be washed before eating.
Having said all of this, micro markets are a great employee benefit. The consumer experience is totally different; sales go up; significant promotions are available; reward points could be offered; and employees are happier.
